If you haven’t noticed yet, design trends are currently in the middle of a massive transformation towards what I would most basically define as “Simplicity.”

The above Crystal Light example is a perfect representation. The “Before” is basically completely covered in colors and graphics with almost no whitespace. While the “After” is conservative when it comes to graphics, type and color. Whitespace has become the most prominent element of the package.

It’s worth talking a look around your grocery or department store and see if you can now spot the trend. Good Luck.

We all hear talk about energy every day. Whether it’s about gas prices, energy efficient appliances, weather proofing homes, heating costs, even electric cars. Because you have to consider, even if we’re not burning gas to power our cars, what was burned to create the electricity to power the electric car, and who do we pay for that electricity, for most of us it’s a large power company. And so the cycle goes, instead of solving a problem of energy costs we are simply replacing the method in which we distribute our wealth to the large corporations of the world.

There’s a reason the billionaire oil tycoon T.Boone Pickens lobbied so hard for energy independence from foreign oil, not for the environment or to save you money. He’s a business man, and he wants you to buy power from him. Support the push for electric cars, go green, and while you’re at it, buy all your energy needs from me.

There needs to be an alternate solution. Why isn’t there more focus on households creating their own energy, why should we all rely on someone else for our energy needs. Instead of focusing on acres of wind farms and a desert full or solar panels, why not a wind turbine and solar panel on every roof.

Creating energy at the household level is the only way to create true energy independence.

Phillipe Starck has these same beliefs, and that’s why he designed wind turbines for homes. This one turbine may not supply enough power to allow complete energy independence, but it’s a start to a solution that not enough people have considered.
